EFCC Arrests 8 Yahoo Boys In Lagos, Recover Charms, Cars, Laptops

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal office, has arrested 18 suspected internet fraudsters in Lagos State, Nigeria. 

Igbere TV gathers the names of the suspects as Abass Mukhtar, Enitan Adekunle, Olakunle Araoyinbo, Korede Adetule, Christmas Gabriel, Christmas Yole, Christmas Emmanuel and Harrison Obayogbono. 

Others are Victor Kenneth, Adewale Musibau, Oluwajuwon Shofuyi, Idris Abdulazeez, Oyeku Adeoye, Omilana Adeleke, Okeke Chucks, Peters Olamide, Abayomi Jones and Usman Olalekan. 

They were arrested in the early hours of Friday, September 27, 2019 at different locations in the Alagbado area of Lagos State, following intelligence received by the Commission about their alleged involvement in criminal activities.

According to the EFCC, during the raid, about five of the suspects attempted to escape arrest by hiding in the ceiling of their apartments but they were fished out and arrested. 

Items recovered from the suspects include charms, phones, laptops and five cars-Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry 2004 model, Toyota Camry 2007 model, Toyota Camry 1999 model and Honda Pilot. In a statement obtained by Igbere TV on Friday, the EFCC said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Worried by the high influx of migrants, the United Kingdom is set to announce new restrictions that will stop Nigerian students and other nationalities studying in the UK from travelling with their families.

According to a report by The Sun UK, the crack down, which will see all masters students and many other post graduates banned from bringing family over, will be announced this week. 

“There has been an explosion in the number of people coming to Britain piggybacking on their relative’s student visa. 

Students brought 135,788 family members to Britain last year – nine times more than in 2019. Last year, 59,053 Nigerian students brought over 60,923 relatives. “We have got to get a grip,” a Tory MP told The Sun on Sunday. 

However, the ban will not apply to PhD students, whose courses usually last between 3 and 5 years and are very highly skilled. 

According to data obtained from Home Office last year, Nigerians accounted for the highest increase in the number of dependants accompanying persons with study visas for the year ending in June 2022.

“In the year ending June 2022, there were 486,868 Sponsored study visas granted (to both main applicants and their dependants), 71% (202,147) more than 2019,” the report read.

“The number of Sponsored study visas granted in the year ending June 2022, is the highest on record in our time series, with the substantial increase representing both a recovery from lower numbers during the Covid-19 pandemic but also an increase on pre-pandemic period.

“There were 117,965 grants to Indian nationals in the year ending June 2022, an increase of 80,569 (+215%) compared to 2019. 

hinese nationals were the second most common nationality granted Sponsored study visas in the year ending June 2022, with 115,056 visas granted, 4% lower than the number seen in 2019 (119,825). 

“In the other top 5 nationalities, Nigerian nationals saw the largest relative increase in Sponsored Study grants compared with 2019, increasing by 57,545 (+686%) to a record high of 65,929, making them the third largest nationality group in the latest year.” 

According to Daily Mail, Nigeria represented 40 percent of the total number of dependants between June 2021 and June 2022, and “some 34,000 Nigerians were given study visas in the UK, bringing with them a total of 31,898 dependants”.

Twitter Urges Users To Change Their Password After Bug Discovered

Twitter has sent a notification to its users warning them of an internal software bug that have unintentionally exposed unmasked passwords by storing them in an internal log.

According to the Twitter CTO, Para Agrawal, Twitter uses the popular bcrypt function to hash passwords.

This replaces the actual passwords with a random set of numbers and letters which then allows Twitter's systems to validate user credentials without having to reveal passwords. This also masks the passwords from Twitter employees too.

"Due to a bug, passwords were written to an internal log before completing the hashing process.

We found this error ourselves, removed the passwords, and are implementing plans to prevent this bug from happening again", Twitter CTO, Agrawal said in a blog post.

However, Agrawal said the bug has been fixed and an investigation shows no indication of a breach or misuse by anyone.

"We have fixed the bug, and our investigation shows no indication of breach or misuse by anyone", Agrawal said.

He then suggested that Twitter users change their password on all services that they used that particular password on. And, enable two-factor verification authentication so as to increase account security.
